The Escalator was the 3rd obstacle in Los Angeles qualifying. Competitors would have to run up a series series of 4 free-swinging planks then down a series of 2 free-swinging planks without using their hands. Some competitors who fell on the obstacle failed beacuse they either did not move fast enough or overthought the obstacle altogether.

Although only Steven Jackson was shown on broadcast to fail it in qualifying, in the city finals, the second step was taken out, creating a large gap. It ultimately took out Ben Antoine, Brian Kretsch, and Sean Bryan. Despite its hard modification, 25 other athletes could get through the obstacle, this giving it a decent 11% knockout rate. A similar obstacle called Broken Bridge appeared in Vegas
